I have found that MyEclipse and WTP don’t work side by side very well so I am tring to decide whether I should use the MyEclipse plugins of the WTP plugins.
What are the differences between using the WTP server view and using the MyEclipse plugins for J2EE development? It looks like to me that WTP already has everything MyEclipse does. Is there a way to make the two work side by side? I have found that from MyEclipse only JBOSS 3.x shows up in the WTP New Server Runtime dialog. there is not a choice for JBoss 4.x. If I use Eclipse without the MyEclipse plugins, the choice is there.

First important thing to note is that MyEclipse builds ontop of WTP. So for the 5.0 release due out next month MyEclipse is a super set of functions ontop of the base WTP distrobution.

More importantly, so you can decide which product you need, please do not mix them. Setup two separate Eclipse installs one with WTP and one with MyEclipse. If you mix them, becuase ME builds ontop of WTP, you will have no way of telling which IDE is providing which functionaltiy. You will also run into problems like you are seeing now with the application connectors because we do our application connectors differently and infact support over 20 application servers (Window > Preferences > MyEclipse > Applciation Servers).

This functionality is all outlined here: http://www.myeclipseide.com/ContentExpress-display-ceid-15.html

and covered in detail here: http://www.myeclipseide.com/ContentExpress-display-ceid-67.html

to give you a better idea of what’s available.

If I am supposed to keep two separate copies of Eclipse, does this imply that I should not install any other third party plugins such as SlickEdit or PHP into MyEclipse?

Also, the last time we tried the JSP editor it was either quite buggy (or we were not using it correctly). We have gone through the simple MyEclipse tutorials, but these are so basic they do not help you when you need to build something significant. Is there additional training material and/or professional training available for the MyEclipse plugins?

The purpose of the two copies is evaluation. The two products you are evaluating solve the same problem, so having them both installed at the same time then trying to decide which one you like, is sort of like stacking two recliners ontop of eachother, then sitting on the top one and trying to figure out which one is more comforatable. I just want to save you the headache of having issues during this evaluating so you can decide clearly which one you want/need.

Also go ahead and install those other plugins, using our metaphore, that’s like adding cup holders to the chair, it won’t effect the core functionality.

The material we provide is in our Documentation section. While these are simple (that’s the idea), you can easily find more complex tutorials in the general case online. It’s not economical for us to create hugely complex tutorials that takes weeks to create and weeks to polish when everyone’s idea of a “complex app” is completely different. As far as how this pertains to testing the JSP editor, I’m assuming you have an existing project or sample JSP you can drop into MyEclipse and see how it handles it? This would be the best way.
