This option on the 3.8.4 QF2-BetaFor3.1M6 version performs very poorly on my machine. (8-12 seconds per response)

I have used this option for some time now with previous Myeclipse versions with no problem. Is this a known problem, or is there some trick I need to know about.

I believe you are referring to this feature with the Java Editor, if you are, this is an Eclipse functionality, this is not part of MyEclipse.
